Romania after Malta is a book at the bounds between memoirs, war
journalism and political analysis. Its author, Adrian Nastase, was a Foreign
Minister in the Petre Roman Cabinet, a government formed in wake of
the first free elections in Romania, organized on May 20, 1990, after whole
decades of totalitarian and communist regime.
The present book is an inside view of Romanian foreign policy, at a
crucial moment, a moment of substantial transformations, when the bipolar
world was disintegrating, a breakup resulting from the arrangements that
had structured the spheres of influence at the end of World War II.
People interested in the events following the downfall of communism
in Eastern Europe may find unpublished information about a highly
tormented period of time in recent history, when a whole empire was falling
down and a new security architecture was being built up on the Continent
and in the world.
The present volumes include shorthand records, articles and interviews,
analyses, contemporary interviews, unpublished documents of the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs, private correspondence referring to the interval of time
between the takeover of the office of Minister for Foreign Affairs on June
28, 1990 and October 31, 1990. They may be helpful to the reader to
have a more comprehensive and more nuanced view of an extremely
dynamic period, full of events that will change the face of the world.
These records will be followed by further volumes meant to round off
an interval of 875 days spent as Minister for Foreign Affairs, until November
19, 1992.
