Summary: "La revolución chilena narrates and interprets the changes that took place in Chile during the governments of Eduardo Frei Montalva and Salvador Allende Gossens (1964-1973). The thesis of its author, Peter Winn, is that, more than the dictatorship itself, that decade, and in particular the three years of the Unidad Popular, constitutes the truly prohibited history of the country. In his judgment, research into the government of Allende, besides being scarce, have been shaped by the point of view of the Coup and distorted by consciousness of what came afterward. For this reason, Winn attempts to restore the history of that time and capture the lived experience of the revolutionary process in a brief, acute and accessible text. The book begins with a summary of the two Chilean histories: that recounted by elites and the experience which farm and city workers lived. ... The book separates the first year of Allende's government, characterized by optimism and success, from the two complex years that came after, at the same time that it analyzes the weaknesses and errors of the revolutionary process, and the form in which some of its successes -the redistribution of income, for example- were transformed into one of the bases of its economic, social and political problems. Finally, Peter Winn turns to the counterrevolutionary process, from its failure in 1970 up until its consolidation in the dictatorship; the resistance to Pinochet, and the transition toward democracy. The book concludes with an epilogue that explores the legacy of the Chilean revolution for the social movements of the decades following it, including for the student revolts of 2011."--Book cover (translated).
