Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889) was an artist of eclectic styles, but remains perhaps best known for his personal pantheon of demons, Hell creatures and night monsters, which he drew in ever-more elaborate configurations, driven on by alcoholic dementia. This mania peaked in the 1880s, augmented by explorations of infernal tortures and human butchershops.
