Tony Cliff's groundbreaking work established the unique interpretation of the Soviet Union as a bureaucratic, state-centred version of capitalism, rather than a workers' state.

Much of this book was originally published as Stalinist Russia. A Marxist Analysis in 1955. It was republished in 1964 as Book I of Russia: A Marxist Analysis. This version was published in 1974 with a revised chapter order as State Capitalism in Russia, and we include also the 1988 postscript by Chris Harman and a 1996 introduction by Tony Cliff.
