For this volume C. F. MacIntyre chose poems
from Das Buch der BIider and the two parts of
Neue Gedichte, in which he felt, Rilke reached
particular perfection. These poems, written in his
less my§>tical period (1900-1908),show Rilke's deep
concern with sculpture and painting. Indirectly. in
the poems on flowers and animals, he displays the
artist's special power: "He creates the image of the
object, stroke by meticulous stroke, and infuses life
into the result by sudden revelation."
