Michael Howard's short overview of the First World War hits all the highlights of that brutal war. He covers the run up to the war, includes short chapters focusing on each year, sections on economics, the Eastern front, the entry of the United States, and the reaction in Germany to the end of the war. Not many major themes are missed, though his descriptions of some of the battles are jarring in their shortness. Otherwise, this is a great brief introduction.
