Mikhail Erazmovich Omelyanovsky is a Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and an eminent Soviet philosopher specialising in the philosophic problems of science. His publications contain a comprehensive
analysis of the most pressing problems of the natural sciences from the standpoint of dialectical materialism. A number of his papers have been published in English, German, and other languages.
Professor Omelyanovsky's book presents an integral analysis of the main problems of materialist dialectics in modern physics with special attention to those problems or aspects that have come to the fore in recent philosophical and methodological studies. It considers the methodological function of materialist dialectics in modern physics and basic research, traces the phi losophical evolution of the Copenhagen school, and analyses such very important epistemological matters as the problems of reality, contradiction, determinism, visualisation, observability, and measurement. Much space is devoted to discussion of elementarity in quantum physics, and there is a special chapter on axiomatics and its connection with the quest for basic concepts and principles in physics.
