This book is really a review of books. When it came to the
task of defining the boundaries of feminist knowledge I soon realised
that it was not possible to include all the feminist ideas to which I have
had access in discussions, courses, meetings, and all the many social
contexts in which feminist ideas are raised and exchanged. Unless I was
going to write volumes (and Ros de Lanerolle of the Women's Press
warned against such an eventuality) it was regrettable but clear that I
had to limit the scope of my discussion. And so for many reasons I
decided to confine my evaluation of feminist ideas to some of the
'classics' of feminism.
