The issues of population growth and women's
liberation are both often featured topics in the
media, yet the fundamental interdependency between
them tends to be overlooked. As long as motherhood
continues to be defined as a woman's essential role
and major responsibility with any outside employment
seen as simply an addition to that role, real
"equal opportunity" is impossible; and as long as
women's roles continue to be defined in expectation
of universal motherhood, population stabilization will
be difficult to achieve.
