'The Forgotten Sense' is a collection of essays that revolve around conceptions and depictions of the sense of touch throughout the cultural history of the West, from antiquity to the 21st century. Touch is the vastest, most complex of the senses. It is the external sensation of the outside world, and the intimate experience of our inner body. It is the sense of pleasure and pain. It allows us to perceive the outside world not only as texture, but also as pressure and temperature. It collaborates with the other senses to orient us in space and grants us the perception of our own bodies as living organisms. And it is also the sense that governs affect.
