This book examines comparable speculative fictions written by
contemporary American women (and one British woman writing about the
American scene) and illustrate the ways in which contemporary feminisms
have significantly influenced the development of this genre. Remembering
or inventing non-sexist possibilities for people and societies is a major
ideological force underlying much of the social science fiction increasingly
written during the last two decades. A shared commitment to feminist inquiry
leads the writers to focus on similar themes and motifs. However, their
treatments of these themes often differ dramatically.
