Ebook: Women writers and the city : essays in feminist literary criticism

The city has a special significance in the works of women writers
because-as women- they have a unique relationship to the
urban environment, whether it is considered as an actual place,
as a symbol of culture, or as the nexus of concepts and values
determining woman's place in history and society. For women, as
for men, the city may be either hostile or nurturant to their selves,
desires, and goals. But whichever quality it demonstrates, it does
so in a different way where women are concerned.
