Dartmouth College arose early in the town's development, thus distinguishing it from the other communities in the area. Scholars and academics from the college led a very mobile existence which focused mainly around the "village at the college." The rest of the town, however, which had been rooted for generations, led a comparatively rural and secluded life in Etna Village and Hanover Center. Despite the fact that these two areas were only one mile apart, they appeared to be worlds away. Hanover, New Hampshire Volume II illustrates the manner in which each of the villages operated on a daily basis around the turn of the century. More importantly, this book offers a unique glimpse into rural village life from family farms, to horse and buggy, to one-room schoolhouses.
