In September 1942, the Long Range Desert Group was ordered to comprise the land-based element of a surprise raid on Tobruk, Erwin Rommel's strategic port and supply hub in North Africa. They were accompanied by a daring new Special Forces unit -- the Special Interrogation Group (SIG). This secret unit had already been active behind enemy lines, infiltrating, gathering the area. Consisting of displaced German Jews, members of this group were acutely aware of the dangers they faced -- capture would mean either immediate execution or deportation to a concentration camp. Disguised as German soldiers transporting POWs, the group trekked across 1,800 miles of remorselessly barren desert to reach their target, Tobruk. The subsequent raid would be known as Operation Agreement. In this new and absorbing history of this infamous raid, John Sadler paints a picture of the men who risked everything to fight against the evils of Nazism.;Lions of Judah -- War without hate -- Swings of the pendulum -- Fit only for war -- Operation Topsy -- Across the sea and the sands -- The 'Desperate Gamble' -- Defeat -- Retribution -- 'A most inglorious episode'.
