The chapters of this book are edited versions of all 29 papers presented at the Third International Workshop on Natural Language Generation, which took place in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, from August 19-23, 1986. The Workshop was attended by virtually all leading researchers in the area of natural language generation, and their contributions address many different issues from all three relevant disciplines: computer science (artificial intelligence), psychology, and linguistics. However, I grouped the chapters along the lines of content rather than discipline. One of the rewar'ding experiences during the Workshop was the discovery that traditional boundaries between disciplines play hardly any role in the study of natural language generation.
