This book discusses the great philosophical problems of our day; not the
technical ones, but the ones whose answers directly bear on our lives, the
ones that everyone thinks philosophy should answer. And the discussion in
this book arrives at answers; it isn’t just an intellectual juggling exhibition of
the on-the-one-hand-this-but-on-the-other-hand-that variety. This commitment
to answers may turn out to be mistaken, if the questions cannot be answered,
but it must be tried. It is said that every age must rewrite its histories; it is
clear that every age must do its own philosophy. Some of today’s philosophical
problems are old problems, but some of them are new; and even the old
problems have new twists, and new answers to them have appeared or old
answers decayed. We cannot assume that the complexion of philosophy is
best determined through the eyes of dead philosophers. We must look for
ourselves
