Movie audiences have trembled to the
vibrations of the erotic cinema since Edison
engineered the first screen kiss in 1896. The
language of eroticism is composed of a million

breasts of a, b, and z. In this survey,
brilliantly illustrated with well over 200 stills,
many of them extremely rare, Richard Wortley
explores six major aspects, beginning with the
Atmosphere People - the choruses of
innumerable epics and musicals — and ending
with the Taboo-breakers of the ’70s.

Richard Wortley is very keen on all types of
cinema, the magic of popcorn and silver
screen now shared with his two young
children.
He wrote and researched a documentary
movie about Soho strippers, called
“Carousella’’, and as an Oxford student
recalls that other aspect of film eroticism -
hot hands in the back of the stalls.
He wishes to emphasize that the book is a
lightweight account, hopefully amusing; and if
there are those who only wish to flick through
the illustrations, he will not be too offended.
