The relations between the Parisian chanson and the nascent Italian madrigal at the turn of the 16th century pose a musicological problem of wide but definable scope, with implications for literary and cultural history. This book is an edited presentation of the second Isham Conference, including the papers read by Howard Brown, Walter Rubsaman, and Daniel Heartz, and the subsequent discussions. The subject has never before had thorough consideration; many hitherto neglected aspects and much new material are included. The appendix of musical examples, most of them not readily available, comprises a small anthology of French and Italian Renaissance music.
