A 1995 documentary - Typically British: A Personal History of British Cinema by Stephen Frears - commissioned from one of the country's leading contemporary directors by the British Film Institute, to celebrate the centenary of cinema, straightforwardly concluded that 'To all intents and purposes there'd been no silent film industry in Britain'"
