A foundational empirical study, based on extensive archival and manuscript research, Slaves without Shackles is a microhistorical work detailing the lives of skilled slaves during the early modern Ottoman Empire and their process of identity formation and economical integration into the neighborhoods of Istanbul after their manumission.
