Sir Apolo Kagwa, a prominent citizen of Buganda, having been both regent and prime minister, originally wrote in his native language, Luganda. The general character of the book is well described in the preface, pp. 7-8, which should be consulted. On the whole, the data are cast in the form of traditional history and are centered primarily on the 'kings' of Buganda, their roles, activities, wives, courts, appointed officials, and so forth. Interspersed with these data, however, and in a number of shorter, separate chapters, a good deal of information is provided on many aspects of the culture ranging from religion and military organization to crops, games, and pottery making.
