The Sanger family are left stranded in the Austrian Tyrol, when their father, Albert Sanger, the composer, dies. Lewis Dodds, one of his students, and his wife Florence, become the children’s self-appointed guardians and take them back to London. Fourteen-year-old Teresa falls completely in love with Lewis, obsessed with his career as a musician, and he eventually persuades her to go abroad with him. A broken-down boarding-house in Brussels becomes her first real home, where a fleeting glimpse of happiness is but a prelude to tragedy.
