The purpose of this study, A. A. Milne, is primarily to resurrect a writer who has been overshadowed by his own creation. Milne often complained that Winnie the Pooh had eclipsed not only himself but most of his vast body of writings - plays, stories, novels, essays - written for adults. There is much truth to his complaint. Practically everybody is familiar with Pooh, if only through the Walt Disney films, but the name A. A. Milne is little known to anyone born after 1930, and even Milne's surviving contemporaries, if asked to name works besides those in which Pooh appears, would probably mutter, "Didn't he write a comedy called "Mr. Pym Passes By?""
