《中国大学1895-1995》作者许美德教授，是当今国际著名比较教育学家，也是国际上最负盛名的中国高等教育研究专家之一，曾任加拿大驻中国大使馆文化参赞，加拿大多伦多大学安大略教育研究院高等教育系教授、系主任，安大略教育研究院院长等职，现任香港教育学院院长，世界比较教育与国际教育学会理事长。
《中国大学1895-1995》的英文版于1996年在美国出版后，很快销售一空，在教育界和学术界产生了很大的反响，并于当年获美国《Choice》杂志杰出学术著作奖。国外学者认为，“Ruth Hayhoe就是财富：任何一个对现代中国比较教育和知识社会学感兴趣的人，都不能不读她的著作。”
