Ambulas (spelling within the language is Abulas), alternatively known as Abelam, is a member of the Ndu language family, of the Middle Sepik Stock. There are approximately 44000 speakers, who live mainly in the Maprik District of the East Sepik Province, in the foothills of the Prince Alexander Mountains and extending south towards the Sepik Plains, in Papua New Guinea. There are three main dialects. The data upon which
this dictionary is based was collected from several language helpers, mainly from the village of Nyamikum, in the Maprik or northern dialect. The data was collected between May, 1968 and April, 1985. The material recorded is as it is spoken in Nyamikum sub-dialect and in the published New Testament. Some note is made of village differences.
