The Curtiss Helldiver, the dive bomber of the Second World War had to go through a lengthy gestation period to finish maturing becoming one of the most efficient aircraft of its kind among all who served in the theater War from Pacific. Between 1942 and 1945, approximately they built 7,200 units of this aircraft, which had its baptism of fire on Rabaul on 11 November 1943 hand VB-17 unit went on the attack with his SB2C-1C from the USS Bunker Hill cover. At that time, the plane was still lower than in many respects to the Douglas SBD Dauntless, the very plane that was to replace! Although over the next two years was improved dramatically, the Helldiver had acquired an unenviable reputation «on the boat as more devices were lost in crashes on landing on deck because of the action the enemy. His uncomfortable flight characteristics when approaching stall speed earned him the nickname of the Beast, and his crew joked ironically claiming that his designation (SB2C) corresponding to the acronym of «Son of a bitch, 2nd Class» (Son of a Bitch 2nd Class). Despite being hated by thousands of crews rushed into combat aboard a Helldiver, this bomber was responsible for the destruction of more Japanese targets than any other dive bomber.
