I own this book and I used it to learn the fundamentals of Digital communications. This is a very solid and comprehensive book, but requires very strong math background. I don't think it can be used as a self-study resource. It must be part of an instructor-led graduate course. This book is probably the best book for communication theory. But it is not easy to use for engineers in the field.
