A lexicographer's task is in itself always difficult, but it is rendered much more difficult when he has to deal with a language like Persian, in which the Arabic element, with all its manifold intricacies predominates, —where a confusing similarity of sound prevails among a large number of the letters of the Alphabet and still greater confusion is caused by the identical form of a number of others which are distinguishable from each other only by the different dispositions of dots or points,—where the true pronunciation of words can only be learnt by long practice, — and where, consequently, it requires a keen eye, steady attention, and constant reading to attain to accuracyIn the choice of the Persian and Arabic equivalents of English words I have been as liberal as I could, consistently with the aim of my work. In the arrangement of the various meanings and equivalent expressions of the English words, I have endeavoured to be clear. I have explained
the particular parts of speech in which the English words agree with the Persian and Arabic words which follow, and have made occasional references as regards the meanings of some words to other words of similar signirication. The perplexity into which the student is thrown in selecting
from among a group of words the one that will exactly fit in with the context has been, to a great extent, avoided by placing those words first which are of frequent occurrence in the language,and those of less frequent use towards the end, and by giving the various English equivalents of an English word, followed by the Persian equivalents, in case an English word bears more than one signification.As to the selection of words, I have given preference where I thought preference was due, and have rejected many words which appeared to have crept into large Dictionaries through inadvertance or mistake, or, which at least, are needless for practical purposes.In compiling this work I have consulted some half-adozen Dictionaries of large size, to the learned authors of which my obligations are in this place due.
