Consciousness and Society in the 1960s.
A Note on Communitas and the Rope of God.
In this sociological study of religious symbolism in Atjeh, an Islamic community in Indonesia, the author traces alterations.in religious goals spanning a century, and relates them to the logical development of Islamic ideas about the world and the self on the one hand and about changes in men's experience on the other.
Mr. Siegel's book should interest readers concerned with the sociology of religion or with Southeast Asian societies.
Written with the urgency of a new message, this book says things seldom enunciated by anthropologists about the relationship between 'interior experience and social roles.' Siegel's singular achievement is to leaven the anthropological lump with these crucial understandings of Atjehnese Islamic thought. Everything is made luminous and articulate by the wisdom that he has learned so well from his friends, the religious scholars.
