William A. Gladstone, better known as Bill, or by his "sad pebble" email address, died in 2012 at 83, a preeminent collector of black militaria. This book is the culmination of his research and collecting of historical items relating to colored troops in the Civil War. The text is basic but wide ranging, leaving room for many unique images and illustrations. Chapters cover the 1st South Carolina Infantry before the Emancipation Proclamation, the United States Colored Troops that eventually counted numerous regiments, and other units. Topics such as pay, recruiting, prisoners of war, drafted slaves, contrabands, and the conventional military history of medals, flags, and battles. Nine appendices cover Medal of Honor recipients, executions, songs, state volunteer units, battles, and more.
