I will agree with other reviewers in stating the negative reponses to this work are way off the mark. The purpose of this work, as stated in the title, is to provide the reader with a quick opening repertoire. Currently I'M rated 1977 USCF and since reading this work a number of years ago I still utilize the black side of Purdy's repertoire. Purdy's aim is to provide the lower rated player with a quick opening repertoire so as to make sure the aspiring player is not blown out of the water in the opening phase of the game. His reason for this is simple......too many lower rated players spend too much time studying openings. With these openings it allows one to focus the bulk of their limited study time on tactics, endgames, analysis of ones own games, and the study of master level games. I followed this routine for many years and as a result my rating was on the rise. Was it rising because of Purdys selected openings? No! It was because the bulk of my studies into the above listed subjects started to pay off! I did not find myself bogged down by trying to keep up with opening theory.

Some have stated that the theory on Purdy's opening selections has changed and this is true but the lines given by Purdy are solid so the theory has not changed that much. A few extra hours here can bring one up to speed fairly quickly. As for Purdy's backup defense to 1e4 the Acc. Dragon... well here the theory has progressed a great deal but one can simply omit this defense until one is ready to put in the study time. As for Purdy's choice of the Colle for white well it is good for beginers but I was already playing the QG so I just stuck to this opening.

Anyway, Purdy provides a very good basic understanding of all of his choosen openings. Will these openings help you win many games? Ummmm.... No! But it will give you fair middlegame prospects and it is here where the contest will be decided and if not there then the endgame will tell the tale. So if you are interested in getting better at chess take Purdy's work and play his quick fix openings and spend your time studying other more important areas of chess since it is in these studies that wins are made from!
