We can contrast this picture with the predictions of a theory such as that espoused by Smith (1982a) in which complex verbs are formed by post-syntactic word formation. In a syntactic treatment, such verbs would be derived from a bisentential source by formation of a complex verb (by some kind of 'verb raising' process) with concomitant amalgamation of the two clauses.
