This volume is the fruit of cooperation and collaboration. We are especially grateful to Dr. T. N. Upraity, Vice Chancellor of Tribhuvan University, for his encouragement, for his dedication to research scholarship, and for the facilities and opportunity to carry out research that have made this volume possible.
We also wish to express our thanks to Dr. P. R. Sharma, Dean of the Institute of Nepal and Asiatic Studies, for his active interest in the work leading to the reproduction of this report.
To Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth L. Pike we wish to express appreciation for nine very stimulating and fruitful months of work together. They have planted seeds which will bear fruit for many years to come.
For work that went considerably beyond routine editing, we are indebted to Susanne Hargrave and Margrit Hale, and for an excellent job of converting an often-difficult manuscript into clean photo ready copy we owe a vote of thanks to Jeannette Newton, Madeline Troyer, and Heiderose SchSttelndreyer. We also wish to express our real appreciation to the manager of the University Press, Robert Critchfield, and to his staff for maintaining a high standard of reproduction and a spirit of service and cooperation in the face of shortages, deadlines, and the pressures of other work.
Much of the work that has gone into this report bears no author credit. Without the encouragement and administrative support of our Branch Director, Lester
0. Troyer, and his administrative staff, the completion of this volume would have been all but impossible. Many were the times when the Branch Director personally relieved project members of other duties or facilitated their work in other ways, and this has been greatly appreciated.
