Number of pages: 51 This thesis provides a partial description of the sound system of Gude, a previously undescribed Chadic language of Nigeria. In sections 2.0 to 2.3, the 58 consonants of Gude are shown to consist of a plain set, a labio-velarized set, and a palatalized set. In sections 3.0 to 3.4, the basic four vowels [ i , a, i : ,a:] are shown to be plain (colorless) in their underlying forms. I argue that color ( palatality or labiality) is a features of consonants in underlying representations and is spread to vowels by the action of rules and processes.
