Cruising on a sailboat usually means sailing to a destination and returning to your home port. You will sail long stretches toward the wind (upwind or close-hauled), across the wind (reaching) and with the wind (broad reach or a run). At times, you will zig-zag at right angles toward the wind (tacking) and zig-zag at various angles with the wind (jibing).
Cruising offers sailors a chance to enjoy their friends and family, apply their sailing and seamanship skills and quite literally expand their horizons. Like camping on a mountainside, cruising involves many elements, all of which are important to your safety, comfort and enjoyment.
