Kregzdys R. Lexical-semantic variants in Baltic Languages.
There are two main directions of investigation of lexical variants: structural and structural-semantic. For this reason, two types of lexical variants have been determined: a) word pairs whose meaning and function agree; b) word pairs whose expressive-stylistic characteristics differ. this work holds to the presumption that words from the same root whose morphological elements differ and which signify a difference according to gender (the de sexu principle) while differing in meaning
cannot be interpreted as lexical variants. In the first section of the study – Research on ŏ/ā stem variants in the Baltic languages – theoretical questions of variance are investigated. Research performed to date is briefly discussed. specifics of the usage of lexical variants are discussed
separately: a review of other authors’ research is presented and new regularities of nomina collectiva pluralization are noted. the semantic characteristics of ŏ/ā stem lexical variants are discussed in detail: a brief review of past research is followed by an elaboration of aspects of the synchronic and diachronic problem.
