The Bayungu language is the language of the Bayungu people of Western Australia. It is classified by researchers as a Pama-Nyungan language belonging to the Ganyara group. Other languages considered to be Ganyara are Binigura, Burduna and Thalanyji; in these languages, the word for man is ganyara. Neighbouring languages to Bayungu include Thalanyji, Burduna, Jiwarli, Thiin and Tharrkari. There are no longer any fluent speakers of the Bayungu language left but there are a few people who remember and can still use bits of the language.
The Bayungu Dictionary 2007 is derived from Peter Austin's Payungu Dictionary. Hazel Walgar started work on the Payungu Simple Dictionary in late 2005, entering information from her work, transcribing tape recordings of Peter Austin with Dolly Butler as well as her parents George and Nora Cooyou, and tape recordings of Geoffrey O'Grady with Pansy and Daisy Mia. There is also a reference to The Dampier Salt Guide to Pilbara Plants for the Garden by J.P Tyler, 1988 published by Dampier Salt (Operations), Karratha.
In July 2006 Eleonora Deak transfered information into the Toolbox database. Revision of entries, and production of this version of the Bayungu Dictionary 2007 was done by Albert Burgman for Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre.
