This book, in various pre-publication versions, has been used in Hausa classes at several American universities since 1969. We believe that there is ample material presented with such flexibility that any class which completes the book will know a considerable amount of Hausa regardless of the pedagogical persuasions of teachers and students.
The book was originally intended as a first-year university course Professor Schuh, after almost four years of teaching from this book, has found that it would be virtually impossible to cover all twenty-five units in one academic year. It is recommended therefore that the book also be used as the basis for an intermediate course, supplemented by readings and additional grammatical exercises.
There is no comprehensive glossary included in the book. Therefore students should be continually making their own reference vocabulary based on the vocabulary of each unit and additional vocabulary learned in class. The instructor might also order one or more of the available dictionaries as supplementary texts (see references below).
A number of people have helped in one way or another at various stages in the development of this bcok. Several of the dialogues were originally created by A. Abdulmalik Mani while he and Professor Cowan were producing Hausa teaching materials at the Staff Development Center in Kaduna, Nigeria. During the writing of the first version of this book, Salisu Abubakar provided sonie original material as well as technical advice. It is also M. Salisu's voice which is heard on the accompanying tapes. They were recorded at Stanford University by Professor Will Leben, wfth the help of Mr. Peter Easton. More recently, Cauda И. Bagari has made some suggestions which have been incorporated into this version of the book.
