(fn. 1) Kirundi is a Bantu language, classified by Guthrie as being in the D group, and reclassified as J by the Tervuren Dantuists. a group of languages in the region generally south of Lake Victoria. It is the major language of Burundi, and is closely related to Kinyanvanda. There are between four and five million speakers of Kirundi.
