This book evolved over several years while we were teaching the Samoan language at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra. We wish to thank all our enthusiastic and patient students, in particular David Hardy, David and Sue Hegarty, Adam Lees and Kylie Oakes, who encouraged us to start this book and contributed with their numerous questions and comments. Our thanks also go to Moina Simcock and David Butler from the New Zealand High Commission in Apia, Western Samoa, who tested an earlier version for its suitability for self-instruction. They uncovered many inconsistencies and also made us change our linguistic jargon into what we hope is a more readable language. Thanks are also due to the two anonymous reviewers who helped to improve this book with their professional advice, and to Tatjana Thiele and Ursula Gehrmann from the Linguistic Department of the University of Kiel, who thoroughly checked and typed the vocabularies. Finally, we would like to thank the staff of Pacific Linguistics, in particular Becky Quick, Jeanette Coombes and Pam Rosser, for their painstaking efforts in preparing this book for publication.
