In June 1889 Josiah Willard Gibbs received a letter asking him to write a review of the scientific career of Rudolf Clausius, who had died the previous August. Martin J. Klein, a science historian, has given a perceptive and sensitive appraisal of Gibbs’s views on Clausius.
