In his Preface to the German edition, Prof. Dr. Fritz Sauter, Chairman of the Committee of the Deutsch-Indonesischen Gesellschaft e. V., pointed out that the main purpose of the work was to provide practical assistance for German-speaking visitors to Indonesia, although it was also intended to serve as an introduction to Bahasa Indonesia, the modern colloquial language of Indonesia.
