Ianua, Revista Phlologica Romanica, 2, 1-47, 2001. — 47 p. This paper discusses the well known current opinion that Sardinian is the most archaic Romance language. The huge amount of data about Sardinian dialects accumulated in the last century seem to contradict, at least partially, the traditional assumption of the archaicity of the Sardinian linguistic space. Endogeneous developments and external contacts have moulded many characteristic features of the Sardinian dialects and according to the author’s opinion certain biases about Sardinian must be scientifically corrected.
