Ebook: Du personnage au masque : le jongleur dans la littérature narrative des XIIe et XIIIe siècles

A la différence des études qui lui ont déjà été consacrées, l'objet de ce travail est d'aborder la figure du jongleur sous un angle exclusivement littéraire, celui du personnage, de sa représentation et de son rôle dans le récit. A partir d'un corpus de textes variés, en langue d'oïl surtout, mais aussi en langue d'oc, comportant notamment chansons de geste (et en particulier Daurel et Beton, qui a pour héros un jongleur), romans, fabliaux et miracles, nous nous sommes attachés à l'étude des questions suivantes : les diverses représentations du jongleur, et leurs liens avec les genres où elles apparaissent ; les fonctions du jongleur dans le récit, en envisageant à la fois ses rapports avec d'autres personnages proches, et plus largement avec le héros chevaleresque et la noblesse ; la façon dont il est évalué, et valorisé ; enfin son rôle en tant que masque, soit d'un autre personnage (le déguisement en jongleur), soit, éventuellement, de l'auteur lui-même.

Unlike the previous studies devoted to the minstrel, this work's purpose is to deal with the figure of the minstrel exclusively from a literary point of view, that of the character, how it is represented, and what role it plays in the story. Working from a wide range of texts, mostly in old french, but also in old occitan, and notably including chansons de geste (particularly Daurel et Beton, whose main protagonist is a minstrel), romances, fabliaux and miracles, I more particularly focused on studying the following topics : the various representations of the minstrel and their links with the genres in which they appear ; the minstrel's functions in the story, dealing with both his relationship with other similar characters, and more generally with the knight and the nobility ; the light in which he is shown, positive (in most cases), or negative ; and finally his role as a mask, either of another character (a character disguised as a minstrel), or possibly of the author himself.
