Although some of the material here presented has been discussed in previous volumes of the series, notably those published by M. Malaise and A. Roullet in 1972, it is convenient to have the whole material assembled in one volume. Convenient, that is, from the point of view of location, for all the objects are in the three villas owned by the Torlonia family and situated in different areas of Rome. Thematically and chronologically they show considerable diversity. A decisive gain is the more detailed discussion now offered by an expert observer, Silvio Curto, whose own previous relevant publications include his elaborate study in Oriens Antiquus 6 (1967), 51-95.
