This volume examines reflexes of a West Semitic myth describing an attempted coup against the high god of the pantheon. The author reconsiders Morgenstern's 1939 hypothesis, and reviews scholarship on this myth of cosmic rebellion within the W.F. Albright/F.M. Cross lineage. The possibility is considered that Athtar is the myth's divine anti-hero, and there is a translation and close reading of selected Ugaritic and Hebrew texts that heve informed discussion about the myth. Finally, the text reassesses the value of these texts, and provides a reconstruction of the myth.
