The Eleventh Congress of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament was held from 28 August to 2 September 1983 under the Presidency of Professor Luis Alonso Schökel, S.J., of the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. The Secretary of the Congress was Professor V . Collado Bertomeu, of Valencia, and the scene of the Congress was the beautiful and historic University town of Salamanca.
Those attending the Congress were saddened by the sudden death in Salamanca of Professor D. J. McCarthy, S.J., also of the Pontifical Biblical Institute. It seemed appropriate that this volume should include the address given by the President at the memorial Mass.
This volume includes all the papers read by invitation at the Congress with the exception of two, of which one will be incorporated by the author in a forthcoming book and the other was not submitted to me for publication. I am once again grateful to Dr André Lemaire, one of my colleagues on the Editorial Board of Vetus Testamentum, for his help in editing some of the papers written in French.
