This monograph is a second contribution (Avid S. Kapelrud, Joel Studies, 1948) of the Scandinavian school to the current renewal of interest in the book of Joel. It concentrates on word studies in cultic settings, making a convincing case for a date between 515 and 445 B.C.
By products of the study are clearer presentations of elements of Israelite syncretistic worship in the post-exilic period. Joel's efforts to combat these
elements illustrate the prophetic use of covenant phrasiology, and the liturgy of the Day of Yahweh.
The book lacks a bibliography, but ample footnotes supported by indices for passages and authors make up for that lack.
