The focus of much recent scholarship has shifted from the redactional history of individual prophetic books to their final form as literary compositions, regardless of its pre-history. (A good example of the latter approach with respect to Amos is P. Bovati and R. Meynet, Le livre du prophète Amos [RB 2; Paris 1994]; reviewed in Bib 77 [1996] 114-117.) The present volume, a minor revision of the author’s January 1996 Ph.D. Dissertation for the Faculty of Protestant Theology at Philipps-Universität in Marburg, represents an attempt at a “middle way” of sorts. The author not only breaks the book down into a number of editorial layers but also reconstructs the history of how they were brought together to yield the book as we have it today.
