The volume studies "rule over the earth:' i.e., how the human race in the OT exercises dominion over the earth, in particular over the animal kingdom. Rüterswörden thus enters the burgeoning discussion on ecology in the Bible, taking sharp issue with much of it. His five chapters are concerned with: (1) the phrase in Numbers 13, "the land eats its inhabitants"; (2) creation in a putative Jehovistic (pre-Yahwist) stratum in Genesis 2, in which creation is modeled on that of Enki/Ea in Mesopotamia and El in Syria-Palestine; (3)creation in the prophets; (4) the feudal context of dominium terrae in Gen 1:28 and, mostly, the meaning of the roots kābaš, "subdue," and rādâ, "to rule over"; (5) and the bow in the clouds in Genesis 9 from the viewpoint of military history and tradition criticism. The essays are marked by careful exegesis of passages, abundant use of ancient iconography, and extensive bibliography especially on the OT and the environment.
